Autumn lovers across the country are excited to unpack their beanies and knit sweaters, but in the world of fashion the entire past month of September means preparation for Spring. From eccentric artistry to brilliant classics, designs we see on the runway at fashion weeks around the world are culture marks that kick start trends.
Fashion Week is the semi-annual event that brings together high-end designers from all over to showcase the lines they have worked on for months. Here begins the never ending cycle in which designer styles will eventually appear in all different forms on the racks of our favorite local stores.
The outfits celebrities wear every day bring the world of runway to life. In order to find ways to incorporate new designs and ideas into our lives, fashion followers look to the street style of fashion weeks. Bloggers and show goers provide creative inspiration and show that personal style goes farther than simply wearing designer brands.
NEW YORK – Sept. 4-11, 2014
Runway: In the fashion world, the arrival of fall means it’s time to find out what we will be wearing in the coming Spring. Alberta Ferretti’s line showed us that sheer dresses are the next big thing and fringe is here to stay for yet another season.
Celebrity: Nicki Minaj, one we usually look to for a sight of the unordinary, appeared much more understated than usual in classic black. A minimalist statement is becoming the new celebrity extravagance. Miley Cyrus, on the other hand, looked “as Miley as possible” in her collaboration with eccentric brand Moschino. She was decked in neon and hairpieces.
Street: The streets of New York during fashion week were filled with this season’s bomber jacket (think: Letterman jacket shape) over fitted dresses. The plaid blazer, adding a retro look to the modern formal staple, also made an appearance on blogger Adam Gallagher.
LONDON – Sept. 12-16, 2014
Runway: British springtime is set for lots of leg! Tom Ford’s line was nearly all black, an oddity for Spring, and paired short shorts with coats.
Celebrity: Rihanna rocked the rainy streets of London Fashion Week in an enlarged black and white gingham pattern, a sort of detailed checker (think: picnic tablecloth) with leather pants.
Street: London street style saw the beloved fall layered look with classic pea coats. Asymmetrical skirts are also well on the rise. Stylist Courtney Smith sported the up-and-coming blanket coat by Dunn Stores.
MILAN – Sept. 17-23, 2014
Runway: The runways in Milan were restrained in color but rich in pattern. Simple pieces in black and white walked the runways with pops of striking colors and patterns.
Dolce & Gabbana proved their dominance as an Italian fashion house with the use of many intricate patterns simply paired with basics to make a statement.
The show ended with a storm of models wearing Dolce red high-waisted shorts embroidered with multiple floral patterns and a simple white blouse with a black undershirt peeking through.
Celebrity: Blake Lively looked radiant at the Gucci show in a rich amber halter dress and open toed heels.
Street: The streets of Milan were full of fall standards at their finest. Fashion blogger Bryan Boy kept a classic fall look of layering with a white collared shirt worn underneath a great printed sweater, skinny jeans and boots.
PARIS – Sept. 23-Oct. 1, 2014
Runway: The Parisian runway is probably the most viewed and highly anticipated showcase of fashion worldwide.
In his second year with the house of Dior, designer Raf Simons put together a spring collection of minimal color. White and black dominated the runway paired with flowing vests and trench coats.
The brightest colors were found as the show closed with a wonderful vest in a tangerine-amber hue. It was simplistically paired with a pair of impeccable white shorts and a fitted black top.
Celebrity: Michelle Dockery, of Downton Abbey fame, always seems to impress with her personal fashion. The actress wore a beautiful leather mini dress with collar accents to the Miu Miu show. It was a perfect way to welcome fall and respect the spring fashions being shown.
Street: Fashion week in Paris allows the streets to become a runway themselves. Many fashion show goers brought out their best looks for fall. The woman pictured found a great balance of color and proportion. She was able to create an homage to the the upcoming trends of the spring season.
