The University of Montevallo Wind Ensemble performed their fall concert on Oct. 17 in Palmer Hall.

The program was under the direction of conductor and professor of music, Dr. Joe Ardovino and featured a mix of contemporary and classical works, showcasing the ensemble’s versatility and musical range.

The concert opened with Paul Hindemith’s “March from Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber,” a piece known for its complex harmonies and dynamics. Following it was Percy Aldridge Grainger’s folk-inspired “Molly on the Shore,” which added an energetic flair to the performance.

Matt Conaway’s “Minimalist Dances” rounded out the first half of the concert, offering a modern take on rhythm and repetition for the audience before the intermission.

After the break, the ensemble performed selections from Carl Orff’s famous cantata “Carmina Burana,” starting with the iconic “O Fortuna.” The selections ranged from the reflective “Fortune plango vulnera,” to the joyful “Ecce gratum” and “In taberna quando sumus,” providing a powerful contrast between Orff’s sweeping orchestral sections and the intimate, lyrical moments.

The concert concluded with the Orff’s dramatic “Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi,” leaving the audience with a lasting impression of the ensemble’s technical skill and emotional depth.

Featuring almost a dozen student soloists, the wind ensemble truly displayed the discipline and excellence of the Montevallo Music Department.

The wind ensemble’s next performance will be on Dec. 5 in Palmer Hall.
